It's a New Day! First 5k!

My first 5k was amazing! So much fun. Running 3.1 miles on my own I've never gotten better than 43 mins. - so when I came up on the finsh line and saw 38:something I was so surprised! I crossed the finish line at 39 minutes, but my official time has not been posted yet. My husband says he thinks it was around 37 mins.

My kids were at the finish line holding up signs for me. It brought tears to my eyes. I got a little emotional after the race. I can share this with you guys because I know you "get" it. Seriously I never thought I'd be here. I never thought I'd be running or have ever entered a 5k. I had no will, no drive. I was 290 lbs and miserable. Today I am 140 lbs lighter and have gained health and happiness.

A song came on my iPod while I was out there running in the 5k this morning. I haven't heard it in a long time - but while listening to it, I applied the lyrics to me and my journey and I got tears in my eyes. "It's a New Day" by Will.I.Am  - seriously - it IS a new day for me! If you want to listen to it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbpnDUj354M

I'm going to do another 5k next month and plan on doing a 10k by the end of this year.

Here are some pics - xoxo

Congratulations!!!!! I finished my first 5K today too!  I feel exactly like you in that I started not so long ago with no willpower and no reason to get off the couch.  Our times are very similar too....it said 36:42 when I went under, but I get the official time tomorrow.

For me, the song that really spoke to me during the run was "Alive" by P.O.D.  When it came on I realized that for once I was out in the middle of a crowd of 5000 other people who were off their butts instead of watching from the sideline.

Congratulations!  That first race is one you will always remember, no matter how many more that you do.  Enjoy your "New Day" of health and happiness.
